Level IV

Level IV armor is a type of ballistic-resistant body armor that provides the highest level of protection against a wide range of threats, including high-velocity rifle rounds and armor-piercing ammunition. It is a standard recognized by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), which is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Level IV armor is designed to stop and prevent penetration of armor-piercing rifle rounds and other high-velocity rifle ammunition. It offers protection against ammunition such as 7.62x63mm AP (.30-06 M2 AP), 7.62x54mm AP (Russian LPS), and 5.56x45mm M855 AP (Green Tip). In addition to rifle threats, it also provides protection against most handgun threats.

To meet the requirements of Level IV armor, body armor must undergo specific testing procedures specified by the NIJ. These tests evaluate the armor's ability to stop and prevent penetration of projectiles fired at specified velocities, including both rifle and handgun ammunition. The armor is typically tested using standardized ammunition, and the testing process assesses both the front and back side of the armor panel.

Level IV armor provides the highest level of ballistic protection available to law enforcement, military personnel, and individuals who require the utmost protection against rifle threats. It is heavier and less flexible compared to lower-level armors due to the increased ballistic resistance.

Individuals considering the use of Level IV body armor should consult with experts, follow the manufacturer's guidelines, and ensure proper fit and maintenance of the armor to maximize its effectiveness and protection. Additionally, regulations regarding the possession and use of body armor may vary by jurisdiction, so it is important to adhere to local laws and regulations.
