Level IIIA
Level IIIA armor is a type of ballistic-resistant body armor that provides a high level of protection against various handgun threats. It is a standard recognized by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), which is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Level IIIA armor is designed to stop and prevent penetration of a wide range of handgun ammunition, including most common handgun rounds. It offers protection against ammunition such as 9mm FMJ (Full Metal Jacket), .40 S&W FMJ, .357 Magnum JSP (Jacketed Soft Point), and .44 Magnum SJHP (Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point), among others.
To meet the requirements of Level IIIA armor, body armor must undergo specific testing procedures specified by the NIJ. These tests evaluate the armor's ability to stop and prevent penetration of projectiles fired at specified velocities. The testing process assesses both the front and back side of the armor panel.
Level IIIA armor provides a higher level of protection compared to Level II armor but does not provide protection against rifle ammunition. It is primarily designed to protect against handgun threats commonly encountered by law enforcement officers and civilians.
Level IIIA armor is often used by law enforcement officers, security personnel, and individuals who prioritize concealability and mobility while still requiring reliable protection against handgun threats. It is typically lighter and more flexible compared to higher-level armors, allowing for more comfortable wear and greater ease of movement.
Individuals considering the use of body armor should consult with experts, follow the manufacturer's guidelines, and ensure proper fit and maintenance of the armor to maximize its effectiveness and protection. Additionally, regulations regarding the possession and use of body armor may vary by jurisdiction, so it is important to adhere to local laws and regulations.
